5 Ways to Relax Your Mind and Body
There are many relaxation techniques you can use to help to combat stress and anxiety. Some, like therapeutic massage, require the services of another person, but many you can do by yourself. Here we look at 5 of the most effective things you can do to relax your mind and body.
1. Yoga
People have been practicing yoga for over 2,000 years, and it is a great way to manage stress, providing both physical and mental relaxation. It is suitable for people of any age, and is as much a philosophy as a form of exercise. It attempts to unite the mind, body and spirit to generate health and well-being in a holistic way. There are many different forms or schools of yoga, each favoring certain techniques, but all are composed of ‘Asanas’, which can be translated as ‘postures’ or ‘poses’. The Salute to the Sun is one example of a yoga exercise sequence, traditionally practiced each day at sunrise, which is particularly good for relaxation.
2. Exercise
Physical exercise has many stress-reducing benefits. It’s well known that exercise causes the body to release chemicals such as endorphins which make us feel good, and also the very fact that we know we are doing something positive which good for us, helps to elevate our mood and improve our self-esteem.
3. Deep Breathing
Deep breathing techniques are easy to learn and can be performed nearly anywhere. One simple exercise involves sitting comfortably with your back straight and breathing in through your nose to a count of ten, counting to five while you hold your breath in, and then exhaling through your mouth to a count of ten. When inhaling it’s important to breathe deeply, allowing your abdomen to expand, rather than your chest.
4. Meditation
To meditate effectively does take a little practice, but once mastered it is one of the most effective ways to relax and should ideally de practiced on a daily basis. Basic meditation involves nothing more than focussing of your thoughts on a particular area, whilst mentally letting go of your stresses and anxieties. Focussing your attention on your breathing, on a particular sound or even on a candle flame are all ways you can use to enter a meditative state.
5. Massage
A relaxation massage is a good way to relieve built-up tension and stress. A Swedish-style massage concentrates on smooth stroking motions and gentle kneading to improve circulation, soothe knotted muscles and leave you feeling relaxed, and when your body feels more relaxed, then so will you. Other therapies, such as Shiatsu, Aromatherapy and Reflexology can also be very beneficial. Various techniques can also be combined, for example an Aromatherapy massage is a favorite of many people. It’s not even necessary to visit a specialist – Self-Massage is something everyone can learn, and it’s free!
